TMJ Jaw Pain

jaw pain dentist twin falls

TMJ Syndrome or Jaw pain

TMJ is the initials for temporomandibular joint, which connects your lower jaw (the mandible) to your skull at the temporal bone. This joint controls many jaw functions, like chewing. If the chewing muscles or the joint itself are causing you pain you may have temporamandibular disorder, or TMJ.

TMJ Syndrome can be caused by stress, continual clenching of the jaw muscles, or teeth grinding.

Teeth Grinding & TMJ

Teeth grinding is an especially problematic symptom because it can lead to further problems. Prolonged teeth grinding, or bruxism, can cause enamel to wear off teeth and expose dentin. This material is softer than enamel and more susceptible to decay. Sensitivity to hot and cold food or drink may also develop from excessive teeth grinding.

If you suspect you may have TMJ come in for a consultation. We can help diagnose you and provide relief for your symptoms. Pain relievers and hot/cold compresses are short term methods to provide relief for jaw pain symptoms.

A night guard can be used to help prevent or lessen the effects of teeth grinding at night. This can lead to a more permanent solution. In very severe cases of jaw pain, surgery may be required, but behavioral treatments to change the way you use your jaw muscles are usually enough to provide relief.

We have excellent results treating Temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ syndrome.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

• Pain when opening or closing mouth

• Trouble chewing

• Jaw becoming stuck open or shut

• Headaches or ear pain

• Clicking or popping sounds when opening your mouth

• Teeth grinding

Many of these symptoms can often be associated with other health problems, so only a jaw pain dentist can tell you if it is due to TMJ.

Is heat or ice better for jaw pain relief?

It depends, so try both. Moist heat from a heat pack or a hot water bottle wrapped in a warm, moist towel can improve function and reduce pain. Be careful to avoid burning yourself when using heat. Ice packs can decrease inflammation and also numb pain and promote healing.

How long does TMJ treament last?

Depending on the severity of the jaw pain, it could be a few weeks or months.

Acute TMJ symptoms and signs may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and then disappear after the injury or cause of discomfort has resolved. For a chronic TMJ condition, the symptoms can be ongoing with episodes of sharp and/or dull pain that occur over an extended period of time (months to years).

What kind of doctor do you go to for TMJ?

Your doctor may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial specialist, an otolaryngologist (also called an ear, nose, and throat doctor or ENT specialist), or a dentist specializing in jaw disorders (prosthodontist, also called a prosthetic dentist) for further treatment.

You are in good hands because Dr Romriell is a maxillofacial specialist AND a prosthodontist who has given relief to many jaw pain patients in the Twin Falls area.
